The Dv5 engine, also known as 1.5 BlueHDi, is a diesel engine manufactured by the French company PSA Group. There are two versions of the engine, a Dv5RD whose power output is between 75 and 100 hp and a Dv5RC whose maximum power output is 130 hp.

Technical problems have been detected in the Dv5 engine, used by brands such as Citroën, DS, Opel, Peugeot and Toyota. The failure of the camshaft chain has led to extensive damage, including the destruction of the engine.

What problems have arisen in the DV5 engine?

The problem arises in the camshaft chain, which experiences looseness and, in some cases, breaks. Owners of vehicles with the DV5 engine have reported two main problems: creaking of the timing belt due to slack in the chain and the inability to start the engine due to chain breakage.

How to solve it?

To address this problem, the PSA Group has made modifications to the DV5, such as the installation of an 8 mm chain instead of 7 mm and new generation exhaust valves.

It is possible to identify whether an engine has been modernized by inspecting the camshaft housing, which has a bulge and an engraved reference equal to 98 305 804 80. On the other hand, if the reference is 98 126 472 80 and the crankcase is flat, the engine is fitted with a 7 mm chain,

The recommended repairs vary according to the damage observed:

  • If the valves and camshafts are damaged but without affecting the combustion chambers and cylinder head, several parts should be replaced.
  • If no parts are broken, but the valve sealing is not adequate and the combustion chamber is damaged, it is recommended to replace the complete engine.
  • If there is no breakage of parts and valve leakage is adequate, all parts except valves should be replaced.

Affected Vehicles:

The DV5 engine, used in more than one million units in 2020, equips more than thirty models of PSA Group brands and utility vehicles manufactured for Toyota. All vehicles manufactured from 31 December 2019 may be affected.

These are some of the models that use the DV5: CitroënC3, Citroën Ds3 Crossback Citroën C4 Cactus, Citroën C4 Spacetourer, Citroën C5 Aircross, Citroën Ds7 Crossback, Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot 3008, Peugeot 208, Peugeot Boxer, Peugeot 5008, Peugeot 508, Opel Astra, Opel corsa, Opel Grandland X, Toyota Proace city.

If you have encountered this problem when repairing this engine, the solution is to purchase a camshaft kit (OE ref. 16 381 598 80) from the manufacturer.
